  • Menstrual blood is the only source of blood that is not traumatically induced. Yet in modern society, this is the most hidden blood, the one so rarely spoken of and almost never seen, except privately by women, who shut themselves in a little room to quickly and in many cases disgustedly change their pads and tampons, wrapping the bloodied cotton so it won’t be seen by others, wrinkling their faces at the odor, flushing or hiding the evidence away. Blood is everywhere, and yet the one, the only, the single name it has not publicly had, for many centuries, is menstrual blood.

  • What would the community think?: 15 things I learned in my 20's (or Things I'd like to say to my 18 year old self)

    damnitamber:

I’m nearly done with my 20’s. It’s really weird to think about. It preoccupies me because it just sounds so grown up, and I don’t always feel so grown up on the inside. But then I have these weird moments when I’m hanging out with a 20 or 21 year old and I realize- “YEAH I’m a grown up now.” My…

  • breesumm asked: Hello! I love your blog and am highly considering applying to Bastyr myself. If you were to go back and start your midwifery training over again, would you choose Bastyr?

    Thank you so much!

I definitely recommend going to Bastyr, although it’s much harder than I ever anticipated!  There are certain perks that I miss from OSU, such as awesome tech support for students and the IT structure itself, but for a small private university it’s the best I’ve seen!  There are a few things I would change in how I’ve gone about it, like getting more birth experience before starting school and starting in a preceptor site much sooner in my education than I did, but I love the program and really stand behind it.  I’m currently at the end of the hardest term of the program (Winter of 2nd year) and I’m freaking out about getting my masters project done and getting all the experience I need in the time I have left, but I love school and my classmates and the knowledge I’m gaining is great in quality and quantity!  I also think they have made great efforts to streamlining the program since I began and the SMS/Bastyr merger occurred and any future class will be able to benefit from our experiences and feedback :)

Occasionally I am tempted to quit and go the apprenticeship route because it just feels like it would be easier.  But I have to remind myself that I can’t afford to do this without student loans, and the added incentive of the masters degree (from an accredited university) means that teaching opportunities will be in my future in addition to practicing midwifery, which I’m very excited about!

Feel free to ask me again after spring term, then I’ll be seeing things a little clearer! :)

  • Half Way Point!

I’ve survived the first year and a half of midwifery school and am now at the half way point!  Wish I had more time to post here :)
